Quote
‘All of Mr. Jones’s work exhibits characteristics which are more familiar in a Welsh rather than an English context. They are often fantastical, full of death, sex and hilarity. They are peopled by characters, not by class attitudes. They are ruled by emotions, not by protocol, and, as is natural for a Celt, they display a powerful love of language which is rich, free and vivid.

A prolific writer
Dedwydd Jones argues that he is not ‘prolific writer’ but merely a regular one, writing every day for a minimum of five hours, Sundays and holidays included. He has accumulated a body of work which includes 57 plays, 2 novels, a book of short stories and a collection of his articles for The Stage and other theatre periodicals. His great love is the theatre, and he is currently working on his next play, The Stalker on a contemporary, highly controversial theme. He also has plans for a further collection of thirty short stories. Writing does not come easily to him and he corrects at least fifteen to twenty drafts of any single piece, long or short, echoing after each one Samuel Becket’s famous writing cry, ‘Onwards!’

Campaign
For a truly Welsh National Theatre
Dedwydd Jones has long campaigned for a truly Welsh National Theatre and wrote his infamous Black Books on the Welsh Theatre as an indictment of nepotistic practices and the eternal in-fighting in Welsh Theatre. Dedwydd received much support for his views but was not welcomed by the arts Taffia. He continues putting forward his ideas, even to the newly launched so-called National Theatre of Wales. Perhaps one day they will answer. Time alone will tell if the current projects of Welsh Theatre will triumph or just return to that old home of Welsh drama projects, the Drains, Cardiff.
Letter to the Educational Establishments
The plays of Dedwydd Jones are replete with themes of historical interest, themes which could be acted out as part of the wider curriculum.
